Ayaz Kala is a cluster of ancient fortresses perched on the ridges of the Kyzylkum desert, about a hundred kilometers northeast of Khiva. Built between the 4th century BCE and the 8th century CE, this site illustrates the power of ancient Khorezm. Mud-brick walls stand out against a landscape of dunes and arid steppes, creating a striking contrast between millennia-old ruins and vast desert wilderness.

What to See

The site comprises three distinct fortresses, designated Ayaz Kala 1, 2 and 3. Ayaz Kala 1, the oldest and best preserved, crowns a rocky plateau. Its double mud-brick walls and semi-circular towers remain largely intact. Ayaz Kala 2, lower-lying, dates from the Kushan period. Ayaz Kala 3 is the least well preserved. Together, they reveal defensive construction techniques characteristic of Khorezm civilization.

History and Context

Khorezm, one of Central Asia's oldest civilizations, dotted this desert with dozens of fortresses between the 4th century BCE and the 8th century CE. Ayaz Kala served both as a defensive outpost and administrative center. The site was abandoned following the Arab conquest in the 8th century. Soviet excavations from the 1930s–1950s, led by archaeologist Sergei Tolstov, brought to light the scope of this forgotten civilization.

Ayaz Kala 1: The Upper Fortress

The ascent to the summit of the plateau takes about twenty minutes on foot. Once at the top, the walls reach several meters in height in places. The rectangular layout and corner towers clearly reveal the original defensive organization.

Panorama over the Kyzylkum

From the summit of Ayaz Kala 1, the view stretches across dozens of kilometers of desert. On clear days, other Khorezm fortresses appear on the horizon. Sunset tints the dunes in ochre and red, transforming the landscape.

Night in a Yurt

The yurt camp set up at the base of the site offers an authentic nomadic experience. Sleeping under the stars of the Kyzylkum, far from any light pollution, ranks among the highlights of a stay in the region.

Golden light in the late afternoon is ideal for photographing the mud-brick walls: textures stand out and shadows structure the towers. Sunrise from the yurt camp offers dunes as a foreground with the fortresses as backdrop. Avoid midday in summer: light is harsh and heat intense.

Location and Access

Ayaz Kala is located in Xorazm region, approximately 100 km northeast of Khiva and at a similar distance from Urgench. The main road is paved to a certain point; the final kilometers require an appropriate vehicle. Most visitors organize the visit as a day excursion or overnight trip from Khiva, through a local agency. There is no direct public transport.
