Rishton, sometimes spelled Richtan (Rish'don in Uzbek), is a city located in the southwest of the Fergana Valley. It is a city with a predominantly Tajik ethnic majority. The region is renowned for its pottery tradition. Rishton ceramics are distinguished by the splendor of their decoration, dominated by turquoise blue and other ocean-inspired hues. For pottery enthusiasts, be sure to visit the largest ceramic glaze manufacturing center in Central Asia.

A Glimpse into History

Rishton is one of the oldest cities along the Silk Road, with its earliest mentions dating back to the 9th century under the name Roch or Rech. The locality was renamed Kuibyshevo in 1937 and regained its original name in 1977 when it was granted city status. Rishton is one of the most celebrated centers of ceramic production in Uzbekistan, a craft tradition that, according to historical records, was introduced in the 12th century, drawing on a rich vein of quality clay found in the subsoil at approximately 1.5 meters deep.

Beyond clay, Rishton's artisans also use quartz and other minerals sourced from the surrounding mountains. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, nearly the entire working population depended on pottery for their livelihood.

Today, approximately two thousand artisans produce—using either traditional techniques or modern machinery—over 5 million pieces annually. The distinctive decoration features blue and grey lines known as Iskor.

What to See in Rishton?

Most of Rishton's ancient historical monuments have fallen into disrepair. However, visitors can discover the mosque and mausoleum of Khodja Igor, dating from the 19th century.

It's worth noting that approximately 90% of the ceramics you see in souvenir shops throughout Ouzbékistan come from Rishton. Travelers are invited to admire artisans at work in the "Rishton Ceramic Museum." Additionally, artistic director Rustam Usmanov offers free tours of his workshop.

In the exhibition hall, it's possible to participate in pottery workshops.

Rishton is located 45 minutes by car from Fergana. You can reach it from Fergana by taxi or bus. The journey costs approximately 4,000 som by taxi and around 2,500 som by bus.
